Here at Never Been Usual, I firmly believe that birth as an act is in all respects usual; a phenomenal occurrence; a natural and instinctive process, beautifully orchestrated by the God-given wisdom of a woman's body. I am deeply committed to guiding birthing mothers and their partners throughout this extraordinary journey. What has never been usual about birth is the memories and stories that arise from it - transformational, healing, and life-giving. I feel called to help heal and prevent birth trauma, and have found a focus on prepared but undisturbed birth is wonderful in many cases.

Birthkeeping Philosophy

Natural Birth Advocacy

I am a passionate advocate for natural birth, embracing the belief that women's bodies are intelligently designed to birth without the need for medical intervention. Through compassionate care and evidence-based support, I aim to facilitate a nurturing and safe environment that encourages the mother to harness her inner strength and allow the innate power of her body to guide the birth process.

Promoting Oxytocin

One of the cornerstones of my approach is fostering the production of natural oxytocin, commonly referred to as the "love hormone." This hormone plays a vital role in the birthing process, creating an atmosphere of love, trust, and intimacy in the family. By creating a space of support and encouragement, I aim to enhance the release of oxytocin, promoting a more pleasurable and joyous birth experience for the whole family.

Holistic Support

My approach extends beyond physical care; I am dedicated to providing holistic support encompassing emotional, informational, and spiritual guidance. I strive to nurture an environment of trust, respect, and open communication, ensuring that mama feels empowered and informed to make decisions throughout her unique childbearing journey.

Family Focused

Every earthside arrival is a deeply personal and transformative experience, introducing new life into your dynamic. As your birth keeper, I am honored to walk alongside you and your partner, providing unwavering support, encouragement, and reassurance. My goal is to create a sacred space where love and positivity flourish, culminating in the most magical and empowering birth experience you can imagine.

I’ve never been usual. It took 23 years to figure out why (spoiler: I’m autistic) but along the way my experiences developed an appreciation for the extraordinary and extra ordinary details about life. A curiosity for how new life comes into the world, but the few birth stories I ever heard reflected fear, pain, and loss of control; birth sounded like something I never wanted a part of.

Shortly after my late diagnosis of ASD I began to understand myself better, my interest in childbearing rekindled, and I was blessed with a pregnancy. Initially I thought “I’ll get an epidural and be just fine for birth” until I learned that involved a spine catheter and IVs which I immediately decided I wanted to avoid, and dove headfirst into learning about natural childbirth and coping methods. The incredible design of the female body’s capability to birth was undeniable, I began to trust my own to birth the way it was meant to, and at 32 weeks switched to a care provider who supported me too (a lovely group of midwives in the Bay Area). Prepared with a Hypnobirthing course, I went into labor naturally at 40w5d and had a beautiful hospital birth experience with no medication or IVs. I felt blessed to achieve that goal, but still felt disempowered by some of the events in the process, and wished I had a doula, who would have helped advocate for me when I was in labor land and unable to speak up for myself. My lived experience sparked a passion for pregnant people manifested by becoming a birth worker myself. After a year of adjusting to being a mother, I trained as a doula with DONA International; my goal now is to prevent and heal birth trauma for others, and to make every birth day as special as the family formed on it.
